2nd World War Memorial

 2nd World War Memorial Window

The window was made as a permanent memorial to all the men of the parish who died in the Second World War. It was paid for from the Melbourne War Commemoration Fund.

The top of the window has the "Hand of God" and the "Dove of the Holy Spirit"

The central window shows the "Agnus Dei", the Holy Lamb of God with the flag of St George. It says “Now is come Salvation, Strength and the Power of His Christ” Revelation 12.10.

Below this is the Cross of Christ with the word “INRI” nailed on it. This is an abbreviation for the Latin words “Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum” (“Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews”), posted on the cross by order of Pontius Pilate.

At the bottom is the Pelican in her Piety, a pelican feeding her young with blood from her own breast. Above it is the one word “Sacrifice”.

The left hand window shows the Annunciation with the Archangel Gabriel carrying a lily of purity, saying to Mary the words “That Holy Thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God” Luke 1.35.

The right hand window shows St George slaying the Dragon with the words “God is not God of the dead but of the living”, meaning that all, even the dead, are alive to God.

Beneath the window is a simple, carved stone listing the men from Melbourne who died in the 2nd World War.
