William Henry Cantrell

The Rev. William Henry Cantrell was the second son of Joseph Cantrell from Kings Newton born in 1808. He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge with an M.A. and became Vicar of Shardlow, Derbyshire.

It was at Shardlow that William met and then married Mary Sutton, daughter of James Sutton of Shardlow Hall.

William became Vicar of Attenborough with Bramcote in Nottinghamshire and finally Rector of Bulwell, Nottinghamshire in 1865.

When William died aged 82, in 1890, after 25 years as their priest, the church at Bulwell was full and the paths lined with mourners. He was taken to Melbourne by hearse and a special train was laid on to take the large number of mourners from Bulwell to Melbourne.

Mary died in 1909 at Broughton Craggs, Cumberland and was also buried at Melbourne.
