Penelope Lowe
Penelope Lowe was the daughter of James Orme of Sutton
Bonington. She married Charles Matthew Price of Derby in 1814 at Sutton
Bonington. They had a daughter, Fanny Lowe in 1816.
Charles was a successful brewer in Derby at the Wardwick
Brewery.
Penelope died in 1830 before she could see Charles elected an Alderman of the Corporation of Derby in 1831 and Mayor of Derby in 1832.
The monument loosely quotes a verse from a famous hymn called Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness written in 1739 by a German Moravian and translated a year later by John Wesley.
“When from the dust of death I rise
To claim my mansion in the skies,
Be this my song, be this my plea,
Jesus hath lived, hath died, for me.”
