Anna Tasker

 Anna Maria Tasker

Anna was born in 1853, the second daughter of Richard Thomas Tasker, Doctor, and Louisa Susanna Tasker, of The Grange, Chapel Street, Melbourne. Dr Tasker was well known in the district and medical advisor to, among others, Earl Ferrers at Staunton Harold.

Anna never married and lived in Melbourne all her life. She was the last member of the Tasker family to live in Melbourne and died, aged 79, in 1932. On her death she owned a large amount of Market Garden land and 27 cottages, as well as her own house, Pool Cottage, overlooking Melbourne Pool. She left the estate to her brother, Richard Beaumont Tasker.

She was the Honorary Secretary of the Melbourne Primrose League* for 50 years, from its inauguration until her death. She was also associated with many charitable and philanthropic organisations in the town.

The quotation on her memorial plaque is from Psalms 26:8.

*(The Primrose League was an immensely popular organisation, created in 1883, to promote Conservative principles among its members. Its motto was Imperium et Libertas, Empire and Liberty. The primrose had been the favourite flower of Benjamin Disraeli.)
