Cantrell Chapel

The Cantrell Chapel, now called the Lady Chapel, is in the North Transept of Melbourne Church.

The Cantrells were an ancient Derbyshire Family who residence was Kings Newton House, at Kings Newton, a small, attractive village a mile north of Melbourne. They had lived there for 500 years.
The North wall of the Chapel has 5 memorials to the Cantrell Family, 3 similar ones of white, carved stone on black slate backgrounds and 2 of brass, one of these being very large
It also has 3 Stained Glass Windows which also commemorate the Cantrells. All 3 are round headed Norman windows, a larger one lower down and 2 smaller ones much higher up.
The relationship between the various Cantrell's can be confusing. Hopefully this Diagram might simplify it.

The floor of the chapel has a number of tiles commemorating various members of the Cantrell family
Joseph, the first Cantrell to be commemorated
Hugh, Joseph's son, and his wife Mary
The second Joseph (II), Hugh's son
Cecilia, wife of Joseph Thomas, who was the son of Joseph II
Elizabeth Robins, wife of Joseph II
